2008 The Year of Celebration Print E-mail

2008 was the year when LLPM celebrated the 10th anniversary of its formation and involvement as a port facility operator at Labuan Liberty Port. Various programs have been organised from July to December of the year to celebrate and commemorate the auspicious occasion. The highlights were the Appreciation Night and Gala Dinner, Expedition to Kinabalu, and Hari Raya cum 10th Anniversary Reception.

2008 The Year of Celebration

Despite the economic gloom around the world, 2008 has not been disastrous to say the least. Cargo throughput has remained stable despite reduced number of shipcalls. While "project cargo" from Petronas 2nd Methanol Plant has dwindled due to the plant's completion, other cargo especially for offshore 08G support service sector remained buoyant and the leading contributor of cargo traffic. This reflects the long term commitment of the industry players.

These are some of the major activities and developments during the year:

  • DPML Corporation and LLPM have been given the right by the Federal Government to further operate at the Port. With that, LLPM can focus entirely on developing port services further to enhance efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • A new Member of Parliament for Labuan was elected in the March General Election. YB Datuk Haji Yussof Mahal, has expressed his readiness to listen to the views rom all quarters including us. He has graced several functions organised by LLPM and DPMM Labuan. This positive development will provide an opportunity for both parties to enhance cooperation for a more dynamic future of Labuan. His experienceand knowledge in the maritime and O&G sector augur well in further developing the industry.
  • YB Datuk Lajim Hj. Ukin, Deputy Minister of Transport made his maiden visit to the Port. He was clearly impressed with the way LLPM is managing the Port and promised that his Ministry would assist LLPM in the port more competitive, reliable and efficient.
  • The new 45-MT capacity Kalmar Reachstacker, our second, has finally arrived and commenced operation in early July.The addition is expected to boost our container handling capabilities amidst the increasing container throughput.
  • Liberty Cup 2008 was launch by the new MP for Labuan in early July. He also officiated the launching of LLPM's 10th Anniversary celebration. More teams are participating in this secondLiberty Cup which was a resounding success in its maiden year in 2007.
  • A host of activities has been succesfully organised to commemorate LLPM's 10th Anniversary. Long service and outstanding employees were given awards for their invalueable contributions.
  • Senior officersof Bintulu Port Sdn. Bhd.'s Marine Services Division made a working visit to enhance bilateral cooperation with LLPM. This reflects the confidenceof theport giant in LLPM and could pave the way for business collaboration in the near future.
  • LLPM hosted the Meeting of Port Auxiliary Police Secretariat for 2008-2010 Session in July. Representatives from21 of 23 memberportsthroughout Malaysia attended the meeting, bigger than any previous meetings.Despite not having its own Auxiliary Police Unit, LLPM was honoured to be accepted as anAssociate Member of theAssociation ofPort Auxiliary Police of Malaysia. The success of the whole is arecognitionof LLPM's ability in managing Labuan Liberty Port's security.
  • Various other parties made a visit to LLPM for various official purposes. They include delegations from MTIB, Scomi, Kalmar, MASA, RTM, KCCI, and the Subcommittee on Security from the Federal Government. Delegations of LLPM had also made visits particularly to Sepangar Bay Container Terminal to attend the launching of Sabah Development Corridor or by the Prime Minister.
